The Origins of Chicken Paprikash
Chicken Paprikash, or Kurací Paprikáš as it’s known in Slovak, is a dish with rich origins. While often associated with Hungarian cuisine, its roots can be traced back to the influence of paprika, a spice that became popular in the region in the 18th century. The word “paprikás” itself means “paprika-based.”
Traditionally, paprikash was made with stewed chicken and a generous amount of paprika, creating a rich, flavorful sauce. Sour cream was often added to give it a creamy texture. Different dish variations exist throughout Central Europe, each region adding its unique touch. Note: Upon browsing and perusing several recipe’s via Pinterest and Google the consensus seems to be to use sweet paprika. Preferably Hungarian.

Ingredients
| 1 | 12oz Package No Yolks Brand Dumplings (noodles) |
| 1 | 8oz Can of shredded chicken breast |
| 3 | Tbsp Sweet Paprika (Preferably Hungarian) |
| 1/2 | Cup finely chopped onion |
| 1 | Tbsp Minced garlic |
| 3 | Tbsp Flour |
| 4 | Tbsp Butter |
| 2 | Cups Chicken broth |
| 1 | Tbsp Parsley |
| 2 | Tbsp Tomato paste |
| 1/4 | Cup Heavy whipping cream |
| 1/2 | Cup Sour cream |
| Salt & Pepper to taste |
Utensils
- Stock pot or dutch oven
- Sauce pan
- Measuring spoons and cup
- Sharp knive
- Wooden spoon or spatula
- Slotted spoon & ladle
- Serving bowls & utensils
- Airtight storage container
Steps of preparation
- In dutch oven, over medium heat, melt butter, add and sauté onions (just until starting to brown) and minced garlic.
- Slowly stir in the flower, paprika, parsley until onions and garlic are coated.
- Next stir in the tomato paste until combined.
- Slowly stir in the chicken broth, until well combined.
- Add the shredded canned chicken.
- Next turn heat down to low and wait a minute or two before adding the heavy whipping cream and sour cream. This is important so the creams don’t curdle!
- Now, slowly stir in the heavy whipping cream and sour cream.
- Very slowly simmer. (until you make the dumplings)
- Prepare No Yolks Dumplings to package instructions. Drain. (butter the dumpling noodles if desired.)
- Serve Chicken Paprikash over dumpling noodles and Enjoy!
Notes
Note To Self: Use finely diced onions (not sliced)
Additional:
— You may need to adjust the sour cream to your desired creaminess
— Store Chicken Paprikash in refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 4 days (if it lasts)
