This post is part of the Five Minute Friday blog link-up. Where I join up with a community of writers and bloggers of all ages and stages who gather around a single-word prompt to free-write, unscripted, and unedited for five minutes. This week’s word prompt is {{Consume}}
The word “consume” – it seems harmless enough. We consume food, information, experiences… it’s simply part of life. But in today’s world, saturated with temptations and distractions, the act of consuming takes on a whole new meaning. As Christians, we’re called to be mindful of what we let into our lives, for just like our physical bodies, our spirits too, can be nourished or poisoned by what we consume.
The Allure of Excess
Let’s be honest; sometimes, we get caught in the current of instant gratification. We overindulge in sugary treats, binge-watch shows filled with negativity, or scroll mindlessly through social media, comparing ourselves to unrealistic portrayals of happiness.
While these things might offer a temporary escape, they leave us feeling empty and unsatisfied in the long run. This kind of excessive consumption of negativity, envy, and materialism can slowly erode our spiritual well-being, leading us away from the light of Christ.
Choosing the Feast of Life
Thankfully, God doesn’t leave us empty-handed. He offers us a rich banquet of things that truly nourish our souls. Just like the Israelites were instructed to gather manna daily, we’re called to seek out the sustenance that sustains our spiritual growth.
The key is to be intentional about what you consume, making conscious choices that draw you closer to God and His purpose for your life.
Reminder
- You are what you consume: Be mindful of the messages you allow into your heart and mind. Choose content that uplifts, inspires, and reflects God’s goodness.
- Moderation is key: Find balance in all things, even the good stuff. Don’t let even spiritual pursuits become an overload that overshadows other aspects of your life.
- Seek discernment: Pray for the wisdom to navigate the world’s offerings, choosing what aligns with your Christian values.
True fulfillment comes not from fleeting pleasures but from nourishing our souls with the things that truly matter. So, choose wisely, consume with purpose, and let your life be a testament to the transformative power of Christ.
May God bless you on your journey! And, of course, I’m long-winded again.

I totally agree with the all things in moderation quote #pocolo
If I am what I consume
then it should be clear
that you’ll be safe if you assume
that I’m a case of beer
with condensation on the cans,
crisp and cool within,
shaped by Master Brewer’s hands
that made the world begin.
We’ve all got to be something,
or it’s thus I think,
so to the table I will bring
me as a long cool drink
in anticipation poured
as the Nectar Of The Lord.
Love this! Amen for sure.
Wise words. Thank you.
‘Choosing the feast of life.’ How can we even think of saying no to the One who created and shaped us and has given us ‘everything we need for life and godliness’? Thank you for writing this, Paula.
Thank you so much and you’re very welcome 🌼
Great encouragement and perspective, Paula, I appreciate your admonishment to consume with purpose.
Thank you so much Lisa.
we do need to be mindful don’t we of what we let in. FMF16
Such an apt message just before Lent starts. Thank you.
I love that thought that God has abundance for us and we can FEAST at his table! Not just greedily consume what the world offers us and not be satisfied. Visiting from FMF#18
This is so good, Paula. Many of your thoughts were what I was thinking as well, but you have managed to express them and get the point across so much better than I could.
Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for your kind words Sandra. I’m so happy my words touched you.
Thank you for the reminders. Good advice!
You’re so welcome 🤗
Moderation and discernment. Paula, you have offered words of wisdom..
I love this! It is so true that we become what we consume. Many times I have found myself aimlessly scrolling through social media thinking that what I am seeing is perfection causing me to be discouraged about my life, but social media isn’t really an honest description of people’s lives. Thank you for your post!
Thank you so much Lori and you’re very welcome 🤗
A little bit of everything is good for us, however I do notice that we tend to indulge in most areas when we are feeling unhappy.
