Next up, continuing exploration of my Slovak/Ukrainian heritage cooking is Chicken Paprikash. This vibrant and flavorful dish has been a staple in Central European cuisine for generations, and today, I’m excited to share my super easy take on this classic recipe.
The Origins of Chicken Paprikash
Chicken Paprikash, or Kurací Paprikáš as it’s known in Slovak, is a dish with rich origins. While often associated with Hungarian cuisine, its roots can be traced back to the influence of paprika, a spice that became popular in the region in the 18th century. The word “paprikás” itself means “paprika-based.”
Traditionally, paprikash was made with stewed chicken and a generous amount of paprika, creating a rich, flavorful sauce. Sour cream was often added to give it a creamy texture. Different dish variations exist throughout Central Europe, each region adding its unique touch. It’s a dish that speaks to the resourcefulness of home cooks, transforming simple ingredients into a comforting and satisfying meal.
Note: Upon browsing and perusing several recipe’s via Pinterest and Google the consensus seems to be to use sweet paprika. Preferably Hungarian.
