The world is still hushed, a soft, pre-dawn grey painting outside my window. No highway noise, no phone pinging, and dinging. Just the quiet stillness that feels like a whispered blessing. In these moments, before the birds begin their chorus, I find a sanctuary in the simple act of making coffee.
For years, my trusty drip coffee maker served me well. It was a reliable friend, a constant companion in the early hours. But recently, a new friend arrived – a Keurig. And with it, a world of possibilities. Now, instead of the same familiar brew, I can experiment with different flavors, each a tiny adventure for my taste buds.
It’s more than just caffeine, though. It’s the quiet. It’s the stillness before the world awakens and screams for attention. It’s the moments when the house is still bathed in the soft, pre-dawn glow, and the only sound is the gentle hum of the Keurig. Sometimes, if I’m lucky, I’ll hear the faintest chirping of a bird, a tiny prelude to savor the symphony of nature that will soon follow.
But it’s not just about the flavor. It’s about the experience. It’s about the warmth that spreads through my hands as I hold the mug, the rich aroma that fills the kitchen, and the anticipation of that first sip. It’s about taking a moment to savor the simple gift of a hot beverage.
I love to savor the quiet. To sit in my recliner, the soft glow of a lamp illuminating the pages of my Bible, or simply watching the darkness slowly give way to dawn as my dog snores away. It’s in these moments that I feel closest to God. The silence is a canvas upon which I can paint my prayers, hopes, and gratitude.
There’s something deeply spiritual about this quiet time. It reminds me of the verse in Psalm 46:10, “Be still, and know that I am God.” These moments of stillness are precious in a world that constantly demands our attention. They allow me to center myself and remember the One who created the dawn, the birds that will soon be singing, and the beans that make this delicious coffee.

The ability to experiment with different flavors allows me to savor the variety of God’s creation in a small, tangible way. A hint of cinnamon, a touch of vanilla, a burst of hazelnut – each cup is a unique experience. It’s a reminder that there’s room for beauty and delight even in the mundane.
With its array of flavors, the Keurig has become a metaphor for the abundance of God’s blessings. He doesn’t just provide one type of blessing; He offers a vast array, each unique and designed to delight us. Each flavor allows me to savor the variety of God’s good gifts.
I can have coffee anytime, of course. But there’s something special about the morning. It’s a time of renewal, a fresh start. And as I savor each sip, I’m reminded of the new mercies God offers each day.
It’s not just about the coffee. It’s about the intention behind it. It’s about taking a moment to appreciate the simple blessings that surround us. It’s about finding God in the ordinary. And in the morning’s quiet stillness, as I savor each sip, I am reminded that even the smallest moments can be filled with His grace.
