The world outside may be hushed under a blanket of snow. Still, within us, a vibrant landscape of thoughts and feelings continues to blossom, even in the quiet of winter. Winter is often associated with rest and reflection and offers a unique opportunity to draw closer to God and delve deeper into our faith through journaling. Just as the earth rests and renews itself, so can we find renewal in spending time with the Lord and reflecting on His presence in our lives.
Think of your journal as a warm, inviting space – a place where you can pour out your heart to God, wrestle with questions, celebrate His blessings, and simply be present with Him. Winter’s stillness provides the perfect backdrop for this intimate communion.
Here are 11 journaling prompts to guide your reflections this winter:
- God’s Gifts in the Frost: What are some of the blessings, big or small, that you’ve received this winter? Reflect on God’s hand in each one. Even during cold weather, His provision and love surround us. Consider the warmth of community, the comfort of a home, or the simple beauty of a snowfall.
- Winter Wonder: Take a moment to appreciate the beauty of winter. How does the natural world reflect God’s creativity and power? Consider the intricate patterns of snowflakes, the quiet majesty of snow-covered trees, or the crisp, clean air. Praise Him for His artistry.
- Seeds of Hope: Just as seeds lie dormant beneath the snow, preparing for new life in the spring, what “seeds” of faith are you nurturing in your heart this winter? What areas of your spiritual life are you hoping to see grow in the coming season?
- Lessons in the Silence: Winter often brings a sense of quiet and stillness. What lessons do you think God might be trying to teach you in this quieter season? Are there areas where He is calling you to slow down, listen, and reflect?
- Warmth in the Cold: Think about the things that bring you warmth in the winter – a cozy fire, a warm cup of cocoa, time spent with loved ones. How do these simple pleasures remind you of God’s comforting presence? “The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he is helped.” Psalm 28:7.
- Winter Memories: What are some of your favorite winter memories? How do these memories shape your feelings about the season?
- How can you be a light in the darkness this winter?
- Lessons Learned: Reflect on the lessons you’ve learned throughout the past year. What have you learned about yourself, about God, and about the world around you? How can these lessons help you grow in the coming year?
- The Gift of Rest: Winter encourages a slower pace. How can you honor the need for rest in your life, both physically and spiritually? What does true Sabbath mean to you, and how can you implement it more intentionally?
- Seasons of Life: Just as the seasons change, so do the seasons of our lives. Reflect on the “winter” seasons you’ve experienced in your life. What did you learn during those times? How did God reveal His presence to you? Consider how these past experiences have shaped your faith.
- Cozy Moments: Describe a cozy winter moment that brought you joy. What made it special? How did it make you feel?
And
As you curl up with your journal this winter, remember that God is always with you, even amid the coldest and darkest days. May these prompts guide you on a journey of deeper reflection and a closer connection with Him. May your winter be filled with His warmth, peace, and unwavering love.

Hi, Paula. These are fabulous journaling ideas. The warmth in the cold is one that I never even thought about, being ‘warm’ in cold. But yes, I am so thankful for my husband who keeps the wood cut for our wood stove. The house is so cozy with the wood heat.
I hope you are doing well!
Take care and best wishes.
